The best restaurant to celebrate Thanksgiving in Birmingham

By Elizabeth Rhodes

Thanksgiving Getaway

Tucked on the lower ground of the iconic Grand Hotel, Birmingham, is something you might not expect… Isaac’s restaurant, where NY meets Brum. With a Thanksgiving menu hot off the press, we talk to Culinary Director Adam Bateman to find out how he approached designing the menu and which is his favourite dish…

Why did you want to introduce a Thanksgiving menu?

The concept of Isaac’s is inspired by a New York style brasserie, so the Thanksgiving holiday is a natural alignment. The tradition of Thanksgiving, where friends and family come together to share food and spend time together, is exactly what we love to do — host gatherings around a table with great food and conversation. It really fits with the type of food we love to deliver, too — thoroughly enjoyable comfort food that’s elevated through superior ingredients.

How did you approach the design of the Thanksgiving menu?

We wanted to deliver a traditional menu that would feel familiar, but with the high level of quality we’re committed to. We have some incredible partners, like Aubrey Allen our butchers — they’re a local family business that started over 80 years ago as a small butcher’s shop in Coventry and are now leaders in the industry. I’ve worked with them for over 30 years, so this was about ensuring our dishes are the best they can be, whilst staying true to what we know our customers will enjoy.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu?

Definitely the smoked beef brisket with the pickled slaw and horseradish. We did some development work with our butcher to ensure we get the most tender and juiciest cuts of meat, so it’s a really succulent brisket that is slow cooked for five hours — it literally melts in your mouth, releasing the full flavours of the dish.

Are there any drinks that you think pair particularly well with the menu?

Thanksgiving cocktails tend to be fairly well balanced, so we’ve developed a Bumbo Spiced Rum special that’s designed to complement the flavours on the menu. And of course if you want to go off piste, we can always create something bespoke for you on the night — just ask!

Thanksgiving bookings are open now, with the menu available from Tuesday 21 - Saturday 25 November. See more at Isaac’s here.
